NeIC's efforts towards a Nordic Open Science Cloud

Status: Preparation

Background

EOSC

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is an ambitious European initiative aiming to support researchers in storing, managing, analysing and re-useing data for research, innovation and educational purposes.

In June 2016 a High Level Expert Group (HLEG) was formed to define the initial vision by the European Commission and tasked with providing clear advice on the governance and funding of an Open Science Cloud. In their first report this HLEG depicts their view on how to realise the EOSC.

The EOSCpilot project is supporting the first phase in the development of the EOSC. It has selected 10 science demonstrators and brings together stakeholders from research infrastructures and e-Infrastructure providers and will engage with funders and policy makers to propose and trial EOSC’s governance framework.

The EOSC-hub project (answering EINFRA-12-2017 and successfully reviewed by the European Commission) will set up the technical infrastructure needed for the EOSC based on the building blocks provided by EGI, EUDAT and INDIGO-DataCloud. The EOSC-hub is intended to start in January 2018.

NeIC and EOSC

  • September 13th 2017: NeIC endorses the general principles of the EOSC Declaration.
  • September 21st 2017: The NeIC Board discussed a Project Directive brought forward on a "Nordic Open Science Cloud" and commented that is is still too vague. "In addition to being a platform bringing together stakeholders and engagement on policy level, the proposal could also look at tangible services that will benefit researchers. The Board was positive to the idea of NOSC, but did not see that the content of the proposal in its current form justified the proposed budget." NeIC was tasked with organising a meeting for NOSC stakeholders and providing an updated PDI for NOSC for an upcoming Board meeting.
  • Meeting with funding agencies 13. March, 2018

Current efforts

Redefining the initial proposal with concrete milestones and deliverables leading to tangible results of interest to NeIC and stakeholders.

Outcomes

  • Internal mapping exercise to find synergies and what could be provided to a NOSC. (2017-09-28, 2017-10-25)
  • Discussion on every item within the EOSC declaration and its relation to the NeIC strategy update (NeIC XT, 2017-10-24)
  • Discussing EOSC and NOSC opportunities at NeIC dialogue meetings with National e-infrastructure providers (CSC: 2017-10-25, RHnet: 2017-11-03, SNIC: 2017-11-21, DeIC: 2017-11-27)
  • Realisations for improvements to the current NeIC government and stakeholder dialogue structures.
    • Desired: Clear relation to the Nordic Funding agencies as a reference group to NeIC, this would also open up for (annual?) meetings providing a coordination arena between the National e-infrastructure providers and the funding agencies in the Nordic countries.
