  • excellent public transport by tram (lines 17 & 18 about 5 minutes from stops Dalsbergstien or Frydenlund; latter stop is only serviced in direction from city center to Rikshospitalet)
  • subway any line (in fact all) that stops at Nationaltheatret or Stortinget (about 15 min walk from either stop)
  • New information! Rooms are on the 7th floor.

Registration

  • Please register here before October 21st 2015.
  • Note, the short deadline is necessary to ensure a best coverage of sites, models and topics, because there are limited places in the main meeting room.

Organizers

  • Risto Makkonen (University of Helsinki)
  • Ingo Bethke (Uni Research, Bergen)
  • Hamish Struthers (NSC, Linköping)
  • Thomas Röblitz (NeIC Environmental Sciences area coordinator)

In case of any questions, don't hesitate to contact Thomas Röblitz at thomas.roblitz@usit.uio.no

Workshop Goals

Collaboration on e-Infrastructures for Nordic Earth System Modeling

The workshop has the following goals:

  • initiate a forum where ESGF node admins can exchange
  • refine the inventory of data management routines and procedures, existing e-Infrastructure tools and services in use, or being developed within the Nordic ESM research community,
  • discuss plans / needs for e-Infrastructures on the Nordic level,
  • draft a project directive which defines activities on the Nordic level to develop services, to educate users, to exchange knowledge in order to enable or improve collaboration (such activities may be co-funded by NeIC, national e-Infrastructure providers and the community)

The workshop builds on the results of the kickoff of the NordicESM network and subsequent discussions with ESM groups in the Nordics. These discussions lead to the following topics with a brief indication of status of different ESM frameworks and possible NeIC support.

Topics

T12 post-processing / quality-check (incl T1 CMORization of model output data)

  • EC-EARTH: already implemented at SMHI
    • NeIC support: sharing methods and tools with DMI and FMI; knowledge exchange might be good across models too (this could be done via meetings and/or a web resource collecting information)

T14 data publication (incl T5 distributing model output)

  • EC-EARTH: for SMHI handled by NSC/Linköping, for FMI not implemented yet (collaboration with University of Helsinki)
  • NorESM: handled by NorStore & DKRZ
    • NeIC support: forum for exchanging knowledge on operating ESGF nodes

T7 data curation and transfer of CMIP6 to archives (incl T7 data transfer and T10 data handling)

  • EC-EARTH: output data handled, wish to keep raw data
  • NorESM: output data handled & raw data by NorStore
    • NeIC support: facilitate the design, implementation and operation of a common archive for raw data, or the coordination of national archives; look into synergies with other communities; link to data management activity; link to B2Nordic

T3 tools for model intercomparison

  • EC-EARTH: interested in continuing the development of ESMvaltool (not specific to EC-EARTH); idea, how to run this directly on ESGF nodes; port it to another platform, ...
  • NorESM: no activities at the moment
    • NeIC support: without knowing much about ESMvaltool and the EMBRACE project, this could be supported in some form (depends on the details, objectives, needed effort, community contribution, ...); generally, it is probably in a gray zone between e-Infrastructure and e-Science tools

T4 model metadatabase on performed experiments

  • EC-EARTH: output data is handled via ESGF nodes, information on data not yet published (but planned, on-going outputs and published experiments) might be of interest
  • NorESM: at the moment, no needs beyond existing ESGF nodes
    • NeIC support: might be a good service to improve the overall use of the e-Infrastructure; support from NeIC could be similar to that for T7 (see above)

T6 ESM user support on Nordic level

  • EC-EARTH: promoting the use of CMIP6 simulations by organizing workshops for data users
    • NeIC support: in general, training is seen as a good activity; question here would be what would be the focus of such a workshop; outreach event (what is available, services, data (?)); summer school (in collaboration with NordicESM?); virtual network / support center for Nordic ESM modellers (wiki, forum, issue tracker exist for both models; can development services share information)

Schedule (tentative)

  • workshop will have two main activities
    • a full day meeting for ESGF node admins (Monday, November 16th)
    • a full day meeting for discussing the ESM topics (Tuesday, November 17th)

You need to have Linux/Mac laptop with updated operating systems, with VirtualBox 4.3 or higher installed on it. The laptops would need to have a minimum of 10 GiB and multiples thereof, to be able to deploy more roles. External harddisks can be used for this, if space is an issue on the primary harddisk.

In case of any questions, you may contact Prashanth (pchengi@nsc.liu.se) and Kai (kailu@nsc.liu.se) directly.
