NLPL SG 19-13 Status of the Project / Virtual Laboratory

The status of the project are generally very good. All planned milestones are reached. During the NeIC'19 conference Stephan and Andrei Kutuzov arranged a workshop in NLP. The workshop were well received with a 25-30 participants. Stephan also took part in the EOSC-Nordic technical session. The Work Package leader had the community representatives to take part in the session to talk about their needs and expectations.

There is a EOSC kickoff in September. The EOSC vision still needs to defined. UiO and UiH are primarily involved in EOSC, but UiO sees as a opportunity for getting resources to NLPL.

New systems are coming online in Norway and Finland, Saga and Puhti. The project must expect to use some resources to move the virtual laboratory to these new systems. The deliverables by the end of the year might be redefined, in the light of the efforts needed for moving. Access to the systems is expected in the July/August time frame.

NLPL SG 19-14 The project survey after the Winter School

A survey was sent out to the Winter School participants approximately two months after the event. The questions in the survey covered the usage and experience with the systems in the virtual laboratory, abel and taito. There were questions about the Winter School and also the community and the virtual laboratory in general. The questions can be found here File:WS19questions.pdf.

Taito is perceived as little bit better than abel. That is also for the user support, which is nothing new. The previous survey showed something similar.

NLPL seems to be important for the individual researcher. A question around the importance of access to HPC-systems, common software and data stack as well as community formation, show that NLPL is important in all aspects.

The Winter School is important as a meeting place (community formation), but also as a course in itself.

The survey will be shared with CSC and USIT.

NLPL SG 19-15 NLPL's contribution to the NoDaLiDa conference

Joakim chair the workshop committee. A proposal for a workshop was sent to the NoDaLiDa conference after the Winter School. It was accepted. The workshop will be held the day before the NoDaLiDa conference (30 September). The Call for papers to the workshop has a deadline in August. A second invitation for papers, with keynote speakers (2 or 3) will sent in a few weeks. Review of papers will be in August. The Program committee has its own mailing list. NoDaLiDa'19

NLPL SG 19-16 Beyond 2019

The board took a kind of stock in the previous board meeting. Some of issues NLPL would like to protect/continue parallels some of the challenges around pre-EuroHPC(cross border access, resource management). Is NLPL a EuroHPC stakeholder since the project has experience with cross-border access?

As part of the EOSC-discussion, Stephan showed that 5% of module loads on Abel was NLPL modules. This self-help(-project), saves system administration a lot of work. UPPMAX show interest after the discussion.

NLPL follows up the national e-infrastructure providers in each country. Stephan and Bjørn will draft a common letter to all the e-infrastructure providers by August.
