Normal training programme running as usual. Middle of procurement for supercomputing and data infrastructure. Additional funding for competence development coming with that: New scientific disciplines (e.g. humanities) and new areas, how to use the system, data management as focus points. New agreement between different ministries which brings also new users and disciplines to CSC services in addition to traditional educational institutions. All courses are offered in public incl. Digital Humanities. CSC Summer school in HPC programming 2018, about half of the places are still free. Early bird registration deadline 28 Feb. Customers video been produced as success stories:https://www.csc.fi/asiakastarinoita

  • NO:

Spring training courses starting running now (advanced courses and introduction courses). All Sigma2 universities are included. SC looking for hosts of workshops. UiO has a close relation to SC. Hope to get also other universities to use workshops. Code Refinery coming to NTNU in February. Conducted user survey, including free text suggestions asking for training. Upcoming meeting with user communities: climate research and chemistry. Norway working on new national strategy with focus on research data. Also procurement process for next supercomputer has started. Political science have user communities re train-the trainer possibilities

  • DK:

Busy autumn with status report for Ministry consisting of three parts: https://www.deic.dk/sites/default/files/uploads/PDF/Analyse-Digital%20infrastruktur%20til%20forskning%20i%20verdensklasse%20i%202025.pdf (only Danish)

  • What do the researchers need (challenges, future outlook
  • Benchmark analysis (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Holland)
  • European scene trends

Presented last week to Ministry and positively received-> DeiC Board extended until end of 2019. 3,5 MDKK received for data management and international relations. Nordic Health Cloud? Feed into Tryggve2.

Future DeiC/ Vision and strategy expected before the summer? DeiC do podcasts as use cases iro supercomputing, handed by a journalist (English as well as Danish). https://vidensportal.deic.dk/en/node/283

New task to be - document the output research /publications iro the national supercomputers from the last three yrs (done manually)- could we do a (similar) Nordic report on the outcome of our Nordic supercomputers?

Change in staff within e-Science competence center. Birgitte as new employee. Looking into a new DeiC web incl. eScienceportal

  • SE:

SNIC 2.0 (owned by universities) providers iro finances and trainings has been streamlined. A new Forum (universities repr.) has been established.

Other: PRACE-6IP starting in early June 2019: with additional focus on online training. Joint planning between new smaller training centers and PATCs.

NeIC status

  • SG PPS course

Another will be offered. Good with discussions on how to solve problems within SG’s

  • Report AHM18

App.70 participants, incl. NLPL Winter School. Successful and much more productive.

  • Status Funding applications
    • Still waiting for answer from Academy of Finland. Next funding application due in April.
    • Informal funding application to VR in Sweden sent in January for meeting 21st. Should hear outcome with minutes in 2 weeks.
  • Relations with Estland

MoU signed NeIC and ETAIS, plan to have a XT-F2F with ETAIS, they were also represented in the 2018AHM

Ratatosk Status and Working plan

Sweden well at promoting NeIC travel programme! AP AMB forward a text for promoting

Finally first applications. One withdrawn, one granted.

Inquiries about mobility grant.

Meeting with representatives from Carprentries on NeIC membership.

Training calendar well filled. Wiki page with embedding info updated.

DH subproject: next meeting in March in Helsinki AP AMB prepare survey questions already in advance

AMB visiting DeIC once a month at national HPC forum, closer relations also with other national representatives desirable. AMB to join online meetings in Norway

AP Michaela: AMB has to get on the neic training newsletter!

AP AMB put subscription info on wiki.

Working plan

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jZaLX1DhKpzaFZ0OgxJUQDD4vOuc2UbEHay52S8bzLU/edit Needs to be updated, change Ratatosk SG meetings into 3-4 times a year (remove biweekly)

Missing so far:

  • Connection to updated Strategy Implementation Plan
  • Closer collaboration with other projects
  • PodCasts
  • (LKA) Data Stewardship focus, there is a great need, can we combine this into the Ratatosk - not to be included in the WP, can bring it up in another meeting, perhaps with a grant application.

Decision: Deadline March 1, 2018 PoCo = MB Ratatosk = AMB

Procedures/Plan Bs for workshops that don’t turn out as expected

Discussion: Expenditure expectations should match. DeIC sees some obligations to make this a success. Danish DigHumLab very active. Should be possible to transfer money from project partners to national providers instead of shutting down the project?

AP: AMB to invite Lene at next meeting with DigHum project lead.

Gudmund Høst going to Iceland tomorrow. Unclear when next workshop will be (organisational changes). We only spent ~40 000 for first workshop. No interest in promoting next workshop. However, If a new person is appointed to Ratatosk within short, and a new date is not set within one month, incl. expected expeditures otherwise the funding will stop?

Definition of minimum amounts of participants? General definition hard, but should be predefined (should be part of the application).

Idea: NeIC hosting a seminar on specific topics to kickstart national activities?

Put into the call text: the organisers commit to promotion in NeIC channels.

More detailed timeline in application process

Decision: Once 80% of the time has been spent, a new termination process will set in with setting deadlines for setting the date for delivering events.

Training Programme Manager in consensus with SG will terminate otherwise and funding stops.

More attractive advertising of Mobility Enhancement Programme

  • prewritten AMB text
  • neic training announcement description text on wiki
  • direct email to NeIPs (staff travel grant)
  • direct email to target communities iro mobility courses

Invite AMB to relevant meetings as arena to present the grants Start of April 2018 most likely a F2F seminar for NO HPC people, Vigdis will get back with an agenda

Strategy Process (Rob)

https://wiki.neic.no/int/Strategy_Planning,_2020-2025 especially https://wiki.neic.no/w/int/img_auth.php/0/0b/AHM2018_Strategic_planning.pdf

Effects

KPIs: How do we measure as a SG how effective the training programme is? SG responsible for defining benefits (hopefully before work starts).

Impacts: Responsibility of XT and NeIC Board. Long timescales. E.g. creation of Chainanalysis company.

Priority Areas for NeIC? Who to talk to to build the impacts plan?

Open Call for Letters of Interest - any contact of relevance, pls forward to RP. AP LKA will provide a list of relevant contacts to RP

Note: contact LoI applicants afterwards to tell about mobility programme NordForsk will have a new strategic plan in December as well, NeIC has to align strategy with NordForsk and Nordic national strategies. Perfect timing!

eScience Action Plan was intended for 2014-2017. NeGI future? Should NeIC be involved more with eScience?

Connection to EU projects? Connection via partners in nearly all projects.

New sectors? Cybersecurity, eHealth, industry? New technologies? Strictly Nordic? NordForsk: Netherlands, UK and Nordic Region. It’s and opportunity.

LKA suggest to integrate eScience with eInfrastructure

How should NeIC interact with European Projects

Strategy area on Open Science?

Future skills among (new) NeIC’ers matching new sectors

Data Stewardship - could that be an idea, Nordic training on Data Stewardship? Not focus point, but activity, Pooling competencies on Data Stewardship (copy similar to DigHum project)

Open science view of open data environment?

Question - should NeIC have a focus area on connecting to users/researchers/national e-infrastructure groups? Outreach and access integration?

Ratatosk SG lesson: Have a competence developing model _alongside_ building of your e-infrastructure!!!

AP Rob to contact SG members individually.

To be April 2018; eInfraPortal, incl. EUDAT and EGI and more providers can join. NeIC could act as a body (trust pilot), for simple users, for advanced users. To map who is using EUDAT solutions (within the Nordics)

Updated Budget for 2018

Budget lowered from NOK 500,000 to 300,000, only expected more activities can rise the amount. Both due to less expenditure but due to need in other projects. (approved by the board)

AP MB: Make Gudmund aware of already promised grants.: Making difference in NeIC budget about already granted and expected expenditures. DigHumPhase1. NOK 315,000, but spent 2017 NOK 5,000=budget 2018 NOK 310,000 expected to be spent by June, 2018 Icelandic workshop (twice) in all NOK 190,000: 1st workshop, but spent 2017 NOK 40,000, 2nd workshop (expected similar costs 40,000) budget 2018 NOK 40,000

AP AMB: Ask for revised forecast for expenditures within DigHum

Decisions: We can not “ungrant” any money. The SG doesn’t want to stop the programme either.

Decision point checklist

Benefit analysis

  • Overview landscape of experts and competencies connecting people (training calendar)
  • Nordic training calendar drives national training calendars,
  • DK did not have a national calendar until Nordic calendar existed
  • increase and improve competencies (travel grant)
  • open up courses to other Nordic participants (now measurable, measurement from 2018)
  • benefits for host of the course, visability but also letting Nordics into to ‘empty seats’
  • Making national courses more visible (also within the country)
  • DK: driving an objective national training portal, without being a course provider (just for datamanagement training)
  • easier access to training material (online efforts)
  • saving money in developing courses by reusing other material and contributing instead
  • improving own national training strategies with input from Nordic colleagues
  • https://indico.neic.no/ as common event management system (like conference management)
  • National level doesn’t have enough competencies alone: makes sense to team up to get adequate level of support/expert (not every country has to have full expertise in one area)
  • Creation of a living map of competencies
  • Getting useful statistics to plan future strategies
  • Networking and meet from each other: kickstarting different collaboration opportunities
  • KPI: Measure how many researchers vs how many e-infra staff
  • Supplement to Research Code of Conduct, improving research transparency integrity openness
  • Transparency in the training materials, both sharing and
  • Promote good training processes (e.g. train-the-trainier, feedback, module maintenence
  • filling up empty seats

KPI:s what topics do people want to travel for? -> *benefit of identifying special knowledge and lacking in-depth competencies

Transferral of results + systematic change

Systemic change to achieve: Even out access to Nordic competence
