NeIC Leadership guide

NeIC Leadership culture, combining best things about consensus culture and structured management, consists of 4 key elements:

1. Motivation

  • In order for the project or activity to be successful the team members need to be motivated to achieve the common goals together
    • As a leader, show that you are motivated and committed yourself
    • Create understanding why the project or initiative is important
    • Find the motivations for each team member
  • Examples:
    • Remind yourself and your team of the expected benefit of the work
    • When you allocate responsibilities or tasks, take into account the individual characters, skills and preferences

2. Openness

  • Everyone can and want to develop, in order to succeed, we have to be transparent
  • Example: enhancing openness during the meeting: allow everyone for round table presentation, everyone should speak up they mind
    • Everyone can speak out their mind, respecting each others time, with no comments (if so wanted)

3. Directly Responsible Individual

  • Everyone (at NeIC) who the decision concerns can give input about a decision
  • People who do the work/are in charge, make a decision
    • If it’s on them to make a decision, they just can make that decision
      • Decision should be respected and everyone should work to implement it
    • Everyone needs to agree upon the responsibility
      • They can not take the responsibility unless they have an authority
    • They don’t have to convince everyone
      • Empowerment, right to make a decision
      • As long as they have agreed with their assignee, who (which stakeholders) should they listen to
      • Prevents decisions from going under the radar, because otherwise you have to convince too many people

4. Promoting leadership

  • NeIC as an organisation is committed to promote leadership and to share it with the staff
  • Leadership is based on trust
    • Leadership is not necessarily connected to a certain position; you can be a leader without being a manager
  • Everyone at NeIC actively take a stand to respecting the mentioned above practices before starting the work
  • Responsibilities are made clear upfront
    • Leadership culture part of NeIC, as a value driven company
