Glenna2 SG 18-02. Report on Project Status, Use Cases and Staff Changes from Project Manger

Topics: Project and Use Case Status NordNWP and UU (25 minutes)

Media:Glenna2_SG_Meeting_2018-01-16_PDF.pdf

PM:s report. Please also consult the last newsletter(s).

Aim1 target1 progress is slow: requires a lot of direct communication with different universities’ IT departments to open up services again within eduGain.

The Phenomenal project (Spjuth group participates) uses KubeNow for moving workloads onto clouds. Could avoid the problem of exchanging resources by being redirected to using only national resources. Transferring job to a cloud resource, where the user has access already. https://portal.phenomenal-h2020.eu/home Job submission can also be done on the command line, just general Kubernetes orchestration.

Aim1 target3: work finished, needs final report as deliverable

Aim2 target2 Big achievement: Setting up Kubernetes on Openstack and running Spark on top of that just before Christmas. Need still some more tests. Also platform specifics to take into account. More work planned with link to UNINETT app store. Could also test with KubeNow to submit to other clouds. Not many researchers really coming with that specific requirements yet though: Reaching more out towards the users with inquiries needed.

Aim3 Target1. Significant success in "porting" Harmonie Arome NWP code to Azure. Runs on 128 cores show that HPC in the cloud is an viable alternative with Infininad network technology and MPI. Team at Chalmers C3SE has good progress in work with bare metal provisioning.

For Notice: Elmer ICE in use in Sweden with successful publications and interested in Elmer ports (porting Elmer to the cloud is outside of Glenna2 project, but done at CSC in parallel with our work in Aim-3, target3).

Preliminary discussions with Microsoft. Previous collaboration with HP at UPPMAX. Industrial collaboration might increase drain of competencies. Industry collaboration is important for research though.

Aim4: Support email address and ticket system tested. Who should receive the tickets? Also Swedish contact points should be on list before advertising more about this opportunity. Get help in all different aspects of cloud computing besides basic VM support (handled by national cloud support teams).

Discussion:

With SSC entering full production, aim4 should be more advertised.

Intel security issue of concern: delay of patching at CSC.

Harmonie Arome SMHI Linköping benchmarking set: needs at least a 1000 cores to make a sensible comparison. (Job on Azure was 10 times smaller)

Göteborg: Ironic bare metal deployments is working

Current usage SSC: https://cloud.snic.se/index.php/status/ expected to double soon. cPouta needs more hardware, currently about 4000 cores.

Decision:

SG approves the report and decides to continue the project.

Glenna2 SG 18-03. Project Plan Modifications if Positive NordNWP proposal

10 mins

Discussion:

The NordNWP funds have been allocated (according to NeIC director) at Nordforsk.

Splendid result if we do more Nordic collaboration. The SG compliments the project.

Decision:

In case of positive proposal, changed project plan will be decided on on via email.

Glenna2 SG 18-04. June Midterm report - Opportunities

Michaela

  • sustainability, scaling out and (ideally) inducing systemic change in the context of DP 7 Transfer of Results / midterm report preparations
  • Glenna as usecase within Dellingr (include service exchange aspect),
  • DP checklist
  • Forward looking towards GlennaIII(!)
  • Potential industrial collaboration?
  • Future NT1 cloud opportunity?

Discussion:

  • What are the SG ideas here, how should we continue?
  • Glenna2 as a use case within Dellinger.
  • Proposal for project resources for NT1.

Andreas: industrial collab important. Important to engage with European initiatives i.e. EOSC Clear future and growing user base, could shrink project to sustain eco-system. Focus more on devops and development. Glenna has reached a stable state on IaaS, Need to prove scientific and societal value. Swedish institute of CS SICS could be potential collaborator.

End of this phase we need to prove: growing user base, clear covering with the strategic. Otherwise shrink and provide what is needed to sustain the ecosystem, could also focus more on application development.

Industrial collaboration needs a solid plan and co-financing Small mini conference/ workshop at CSC and invite all the others providers

Sustainability: what parts need further support?

Emphasize on the service side: services provided in the Nordics offered to all Nordics.

Clear strategy on how we should approach Europe needed. Common strategy

Appstore and utilities and deep learning machine learning could be good to put on top of a Nordic science infrastructure.

Towards Europe: where can we do a good contribution, and prioitized on that.

Joint master level course curriculum?

Decision:

Organize a mini workshop and Write up a strategy document with the help of Rob.

Need WS latest in beginning of May

  • DP checklist

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1E-bvpV2hguMtpoaIdGutTt9MqTFnfYeyWyCQI3qBrMI/edit#

ToR has been properly decided. Benefit analysis needed, first meeting with RG needed, PM and PO will continue to work on DP checklist beyond DP4 and present again in the next meeting.

Glenna2 SG 18-05. Sustainability, Systemic Change and Transferral of Results

  • sustainability, scaling out and (ideally) inducing systemic change in the context of DP 7

Most of the things produced are in the context of the National Providers. Social Innovation Spiral. Glenna in prototype phase

Decision:

N/A

Glenna2 SG 18-06. NeIC Announcements

Topics: Strategy development, EOSC, Project SG PPS course, AHM-18 preparations

Discussion: NeIC has updated strategy implementation plan.

New sections on data management and added services. For future strategies we are in a preparations but have essentially a blank page.

NeIC is trying to formulate a new strategy and asks for input from the projects and SG members. AHM will be a starting point for this. We will sit down and discuss the ideas from the staff.

PPS course for all SG members held. Michaela attended.

Damien LeCarpentier proposal Nordic Open Science Cloud. NeIC does not have enough alignments with the funding agencies and consequently a March 13th meeting to discuss with the FA:s is scheduled at CSC in Finland. EOSC is interested in production level services.

Decision:

N/A

Glenna2 SG 18-07. AOB and self assessment

Discussion:

Potential new use case, Andreas will inform us about this via email and phone.

Staff replacement needed in Norway at UiO.

Decision:

Next online SG meeting to be scheduled for at least 3 hours.

Glenna2 SG 18-08. Next meeting

Decision:

Dan to do a doodle for weeks 15-17.
