Minutes

18-01. Welcome and ToR (15')

Presence:

  • Michaela
  • Dan
  • John
  • Ola
  • Jörn

Suggested ToR:

  • Reference Group combines expertise from user and e-infrastructure sides
  • RG supports project management (=Dan) with their experience and connections
  • RG is a discussion partner for project on plans and new ideas
  • RG successively ensures the acceptability of the result within the user organisation

Within NeIC the SG makes the decision, but the RG can give strong recommendations.

18-02. PPS methodology and NeIC project life cycle (15')

Michaela reviewed the PPS methodology

18-03. DP checklist (15')

Tool used by PO (Michaela) and PM, when preparing SG meetings as suggested by NeIC internal light Project analysis.

Only introduced when project already started.

RG and benefit analysis were missing so far.

18-04. Input to Benefit analysis (Dan, all) (35')

Glenna2 Business case document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YhjQADRmNywGP2gmy9wXOHMq0i_GPX5RXg1ohJbTXb0/edit#heading=h.gjdgxs

Ola:

  • Biggest justification is enabling of science collaboration that couldn’t be done else (in other forms).
  • NeIC and Nordic context makes open positions more attractive for scientists: strong link to well working infrastructure as key component (other countries are envious of this!).
  • Competitive advantage: Enabling of participation (in EU projects, etc..), moving away from HPC towards cloud faster than other research groups
  • Shouldn’t feel restricted to national resources (not all systems are the same,..) go for best fit instead.
  • Motivation for pursuing a portable environment

John:

  • Dellingr: parallel to Glenna, but in HPC, going in the same direction. Use cases for sharing resources long-term allowing specialisation and bundled funding. Making service exchange between HPC/Storage and Cloud resources possible. How does Glenna plan to share resources?
  • EISCAT_3D: gaining access to suitable resources for user analysis (for a short timeframe). (Collect computing time needs in a monthly campaign). Advance EISCAT_3D in their computing planning: with concrete tests/pilots. Testing Dirac portal within EOSC CC: mostly works, but more reliable VMs in the background would be desirable. Providing alternative Computing elements.

Jørn:

  • Preprocessing of data: from different Nordic MET institutes, expand this even more
  • Exploring synergies
  • Access to data at one location, less local data transfers, calculations done near to where the data is, can provide concrete examples.

18-05. Future opportunities (10')

Similar satellite data going to SE; NO and FI, each country has developed their own software to handle this. Today very fragmented.

Advanced user arena? Use support channel for this and do statistics on it.

18-06. AOB and next meeting

Commercial IaaS is available for the universities and other research institutes through Géants framework agreement (https://clouds.geant.org/support-for-institutions/)

Other useful information can be found in the cookbook: https://clouds.geant.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/IaaS-Framework-Cookbook-V4.4.pdf

Next meeting:

  • will send reworked version of benefit analysis via email
  • likely only after the summer (after next SG meeting and midterm report at NeIC Board meeting)
