Minutes

Presence, approval of agenda (5')

Present: John (JW), Tomasz (TM), Craig (CH), Yasunobu (YO)

The agenda is approved.

Project status

Project status given by John.

YO: The status of the project looks fine.

Project plan

Deliverable 1

  • The document is accepted by the SG. Can be moved to the public page (action) . Should check for NeIC visibility.
  • The document is to be updated when most useful for the EISCAT_3D project. To be coordinated with Johan and Henrik (also project group). Action.

TM: There are these Appendices A and B. Are these future outlooks still valid? (Yes).

CH: The document is certainly fulfilling the requirements of the E3DDS project. Gives the recommendations to EISCAT_3D. There is the expertise in NeIC. Soon there are purchases to be made. I am happy with way it's gone... a lot of work. One thing is the possible "factor of two" for the second beam forming computing.... a bit surprising. Gives us a scramble to accomodate.

YO: How did you decide on the minimum requirement for the data chain (5 MHz full power).

JW: We used the EISCAT_3D project minimum. From technical description?

CH: The current thinking is that we can upgrade compute facilities for 30 MHz operations.

Deliverable 2

CH: Indeed the Space Debris is the politically difficult case... We don't envision doing this very often. We focus on our best capability... incoherent scatter. Space debris a side benefit. Although it could lead to increased ESA funding. It's fine to look at the capacity of the radar to do Space debris but not to drive design decisions.

JW: Invite Johan K/Daniel K to the Stakeholder meeting?

CH: Yes. But need to be careful to not have everyone think this is the case. (Action)

CH: For the rocket launch we want to look at the volumes surrounding the rocket and not the rocket itself.

(Also for the Stakeholder meeting?)

CH: Yes. Either Ingemar or Assar. (Action)

Milestone 1 CodeRefinery workshop

TM: Please note.... the CodeRefinery will not run for ever. The repositories will need to be taken over!

(JW: We need to take note of this in the project group!) (Action)

Milestone 2

Noted that the discussions with the software people are ongoing each week.

New Topic?

CH: Yes. This is a useful topic to follow. Consult Johan/Henrik for what and when.

John to email with Johan and Henrik to see how to include the cluster management work. (action)

Operational Profiling

  • We have the space debris and rockets
  • Also the 5 MHz low power mode...

Stakeholder meeting

TM: We don't have a list of attendees...

CH: Should be able to be there as day before I am in Oulu.

YO: Too much travel to be present.

TM: Any other topics for this meeting? (No).

Action: John to send reminder email. Start building the agenda.

Documents from E3DS

TM: Try sending another reminder to Norway about the BenchIT. Also follow up on the EuroHPC work. Action.

E3DDS future

Tomasz: The deadline will be in late May 23rd or 30th. We need to decide on whether to do in May 2019 or 2020?

CH: We need to determine why it's bad to end in April 2020... what's missing?

CH: By then we should be working on writing code and testing systems?

TM: Do we aim at submitting... or leave it?

CH: Need to have the case. Resources to propose the case.

TM: Timing? Case ready for Stakeholder meeting? March 27th?

TM: John to coordinate the case. (Action)

  • We agree on a meeting 09h00 March 27th, Espoo (16h00 Japan)

Next meeting

  • See above... March 27th 09h00-10h00 Espoo (Yasunobu by remote)

AOB

Tomasz: The "sites" decision... More information?

CH: As for the processing sites there is no progress. We are not focussing on this right now. Delivery of antennas. Permits for land development etc. There are also some additional tenders. We need to install e-infrastructure that we can afford. But not over-commit.

CH: We are not going to have three data centres.

TM: Where are the data centres?

CH: Still to be determined.

TM: Are there any updates on timetable?

CH: We are still on schedule... operational by the end of 2021. One year of cushion... but start to push against this schedule. This is operations for customers... i.e. scientists in each member nations.
